Description

Georg Jensen "Akkeleje" Silver Fork No 144 Measures. 15.8 cm L.

Designed in 1918 by Georg Jensen (1866-1935).

Georg Jensen was a world-famous silversmith who created silver products of the highest artistic and craftsmanship quality.

His company has had over 90 designers over the years.

Jensen was very artistic as a child and when he was 14, his family moved to Copenhagen so he could be apprenticed to a goldsmith. However, he wanted to become a sculptor, so he was accepted as a sculpture student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, from which he graduated in 1892 at the age of 25.

In the following years, he met Johan Rohde, a painter, designer, sculptor, writer and architect who, together with Joakim Skovgaard, had founded the Free Exhibition, where Jensen was offered the opportunity to exhibit his sculpture, which had been rejected at the Charlottenborg Exhibition.

Jensen received a travel grant from the Danish Academy. He was inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which fused beauty and utility. He decided to combine beauty and practicality.

Jensen took a job with Mogens Ballin, a Danish Art Nouveau artist. Ballin allowed the artists who worked for him to exhibit their work under their own names and he commissioned Jensen.

In 1904 Jensen decided to open his own silver shop. He dealt with jewellery as it required a small investment. In the same year, he exhibited for the first time as an independent silversmith at the Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen, which was a success that could be felt in the workshop, where sales grew steadily.

His success with jewellery led him to make corpus. He made a teapot with the well-known flower motif "Magnolia", which became the prototype for an entire tea/coffee set.

1916 the company GEORG JENSEN SØLVSMEDIE A/S was founded

He won the Grand Prix at the World's Fair in 1927, 1929, 1932 and 1935.

Georg Jensen had five children and died in 1935 at the age of 69.
